MARYFEST ROYALTY COURT

BIOGRAPHIES

Queen Kaija Wilcox

Parent’s names - Janet and Wayne Wilcox

Born where - Marysville, WA

Greater Marysville area resident for - 18 years

High School - Marysville-Pilchuck High School (Senior)

School Activities  - I am in Running Start, a program that allows high school students to take courses at local community colleges. Also, I am in choir at MPHS. As far as extracurricular activities go, I used to be in Colorguard (part of marching band) but I had to quit because all of the parades they were going to were the same ones the senior royalty is doing as well.

Awards from school - I have earned a spot on the honor roll every year since sixth grade. My sophomore year, I was elected to be part of student government as well.

Community Involvement - With a lot of hard work and little luck, I have been selected to be a part of All-State and All-Northwest choirs all of my high school years. I have served as Secretary, Counselor and President of youth group for my church.

Continuing Education (College, Trade school, etc.) - I plan on attending the University of Washington and joining their Music Department. Eventually, I'd like to get into music education. Ideally, I would be a high school choir teacher, but I'm also considering private voice lessons as a more flexible option. I also enjoy psychology (though not quite as much as music) so if circumstances allow, I'd like to get a doctorate in psychology so I could study the effects of music on the brain. It could be pretty cool to combine two of my favorite subjects.

College Major - Music Education/Psychology.

Have you ever attended the Strawberry Festival?  Yes! If so, what is your favorite memory of the Festival? I love attending various parts of the Strawberry Festival! My favorites are the carnival, the bazaar at Asbery Field, and of course the parade. A fond memory I have is when princesses from various floats would throw candy to my in the crowd. I always loved seeing the royalty.

Why did you decide to compete for the Royalty Court? As part of service, it was rewarding to see members of a community be so willing to contribute to a cause. Also, participating in Colorguard allowed me to attend a few parades. This and the service let me see the community unified together. Everyone at the parades was there for the same reason and seeing the smiles on the peoples' faces was so much fun! I wanted to be a part of that. I wanted to put those smiles there.

What is your favorite tv show and/or movie? I like Up and Chuck, but not because they spell upchuck when put together.

What is your favorite song? Too many to pick, although I'm really into the song "Conspiracy" by Paramore.

What is the last book that you read? The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I only read it, however, because my literature class required it.

Who inspires you the most? Helen Keller. Why? She was a woman who not only functioned in the face of adversity but thrived in it. How many of us would be able to write seven books? How many of us could write seven books while blind AND deaf? Helen Keller makes me want to quit complaining about my problems and start moving forward.

If you were stranded on a deserted island – what would be the one thing that you would that you would miss most (other than your family and friends)? My bed. I love catching some zzzzzz.

If you could travel back in time, what year would you go to and why? Sometime in the 1930's. It would be cool to experience the Great Depression and feel what it was like myself. I wouldn't want to stay for too long, though. I'm not sure I'm tough enough to endure that.

What advice can you give for aspiring future Royalty Candidates?
Be yourself!! Personality is one of the points you're judged on. So let it shine.
